Wondering

Christopher Robin

giant pooh bear
Winnie-the-Pooh

I know, I know! But let’s not mention age. Or Disney. Or be cynical in any way at all.

I have always, always, always loved this bear. I even have one that is bigger than the four year old (see above!) I got him when I was twenty-two; that should be a decent indicator of my love for this particular bear and his attitude to life.

There once was a time when I could get a diary and matching calendar that was made up of the original illustrations, not the Disney versions, but sadly I haven’t seen them for years. They got me through university though.

Let’s just be grateful to have the wisdom of Winne-the-Pooh back on our screens. And whatever holes are in the plot, they are more than made up for by the aptness of the bear. Right colour, right size, right shade of red on the sweater, right tone of voice, just enough gravelly undertones to deliver the gems he imparts so simply, their magnitude lingering long afterwards.

‘Doing nothing often leads to the very best kind of something.’

‘People say nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day.’

‘I always get to where I’m going by walking away from where I’ve been.’

‘What day is it?’ ‘It’s today.’

Silly old bear. Not so silly after all.
